Starting and Running a Small Business – Manage Your Invoices

If your small business will need to send invoices to customers and clients you want the invoices to look professional. You also don’t want the process of tracking billable time, creating and sending invoices and collecting payment to be hard or time consuming.

Starting and Running a Small Business - Manage Your Invoices

In this post, I explore a popular solution for service-based small businesses.

Freshbooks is an affordable, all-in-one time-tracking, invoicing and accounting software package.

What is Freshbooks?

Freshbooks is an accounting solution for small, service-based businesses.

You can track billable time for you and your employees, create and send invoices, get paid and log information and receipts for your business expenses.

Their software synchs across their mobile and desktop apps, so you can seamlessly switch between working on all your devices.

In this post, I demonstrate how easy it is to begin testing the Freshbooks platform by taking advantage of their completely free, no credit card required trial.

I walk you through the simple registration process using Embarkment Salon, the example business used throughout The Embarkment’s Guide to Creating a LivePlan and Guide to Starting and Running a Small Business.

Enter your email address and a password for your account.

Then, check your email inbox to confirm your email address.

Once your email address is confirmed, you’ll spend about 90 seconds setting up your business before you can begin exploring the various tools included with your Freshbooks account.

Enter your name, business name and address.

Then, select the type of business you run.

Keep in mind, Freshbooks is not a fit for every type of small business.

Generally speaking, it makes the most sense for businesses that perform some kind of service and need to bill their customers or clients.

Freshbooks may not be the best solution for a typical beauty salon.

A typical salon would be better off exploring other accounting solutions or hiring a bookkeeper from Bench.

However, if you’re following along, you know that Embarkment Salon’s business model is based on renting stations to independently contracted hairstylists and nail techs.

So Embarkment Salon could use Freshbooks to invoice those contracted service providers monthly.

I choose “I’m from a different industry”.

I choose rental property management as the most appropriate business model for this example.

However, it is important to note that this is only for setting up some initial accounts for your Freshbooks.

You can customize all of this once you get started, regardless of which of these options you choose.

Identify how large your team is and you’ll be done with the registration.

You can begin exploring the Freshbooks platform.

You’ll start out at the dashboard.

You can begin creating invoices and estimates and tracking expenses and time spent on billable work.

It only took me a couple minutes to add a new client, upload Embarkment Salon’s logo and create this basic invoice.

See how easy it is to start using Freshbooks in your business.
